DESCRIPTION:

Three and a half carats in a cushion cut is a lot of visible stone. The center diamond weighs 3.52 carats and is cushion cut, set in highly polished 18K white gold. A cushion holds a broad square outline with rounded corners, so it reads wider on the finger than a round brilliant of the same weight while keeping the crushed ice sparkle that a step cut would not give.

Smaller round cut diamonds form the side stones and add 0.90 carats, taking total diamond weight to 4.42 carats. The ring measures 11.68 mm across and the mounting weighs 5.5 grams.

The grades deserve a straight explanation. Clarity is VS1, which means nothing is visible to the naked eye. Color is J, the last of the near colorless grades, where a faint warmth can show in a stone this large when viewed face down against white paper, though far less so face up in a setting. Color grade moves price steeply above three carats, so a J center buys considerably more stone than a G or an H would for the same outlay. That is the trade this ring makes, and it makes it in favor of size.
